Let's Dance!

dance dance tips Aug 13, 2019

Welcome! I’m so happy you’re here. My name is Carrie, and I’m passionate about helping people discover the joy of dance. Dance is for everyone. It’s a universal language. It creates joy and connection, and I believe that’s something worth sharing. That's why I’m creating this space to post dance tips and tutorials for anyone who wants to join in the fun. :)

A little about me - I’m a stay-at-home mom by day and dance instructor by night. I live in Texas with my husband, daughter, and two dogs. I’m also a certified health coach and personal trainer. I love coffee, Target, puzzles, General Hospital, young adult novels, all things personal development, and dance. But the thing that lights me up like no other is teaching dance.

I took my first dance class at the age of 10, and after my second lesson, I declared to my family that I wanted to be a dance teacher when I grew up. It’s hard to express in words, but I feel like dance is a part of who I am as a person. If you have dance experience, you might know this feeling! Dance is intertwined with the fiber of my being - and my 10-year-old self recognized this immediately. I taught my first piece of choreography at 14 and started my first official teaching job at 18. I spent parts of the next 17 years teaching dance in various ways…traditional classes (ballet, tap, jazz, etc.), Zumba, and creating choreography for different charity events. Then the real magic happened. I started working at a studio for adults and fell in love with teaching adult dancers. In particular, I love sharing dance with adults who are trying a class for the first time ever or those who haven’t danced in several years. Seeing the joy on someone’s face when they experience joyful movement is nothing short of AMAZING. So now I’m obsessed with finding ways to offer this joyful experience to more people - which is why I decided to start this blog dedicated to sharing dance tips and tutorials (plus the occasional health or fitness tidbit).

What style of tutorials can you expect? For now, you'll find tap dance (basic technique and choreography) and pop choreography (basic moves to popular music). Some will focus on iconic moves - think Michael Jackson's Thriller or *NSYNC's Bye Bye Bye - while others will be my own choreography. Side note: Did you know that learning choreography is a great mental workout? Practicing a new step or remembering a sequence of moves can help build new neural pathways in your brain, which in turn can potentially lower your risk for dementia!

So who's this space for? I'm creating this for ANYONE who's interested in moving more, learning basic choreography, and experiencing the benefits (body, mind, and soul!) of dance; however, when I create tutorials, I'm specifically thinking about someone with NO dance experience or someone far-removed from their experience. My teaching style is intentionally slow-paced with a lot of repetition. I use basic moves and offer modifications in hopes of making dance more accessible for the masses.

If you’ve long-dreamed of learning to dance but never had the opportunity, OR you’re a former dancer looking to rekindle your love of dance, OR you love dance but have no access to a local studio, OR you simply love dance in general - this blog is for YOU! So when you’re ready, let’s dance!
